In today’s bustling world, personal growth has become an invaluable pursuit for individuals seeking self-improvement and fulfillment. While many methods contribute to personal growth, one often overlooked yet immensely powerful approach is embracing solitude. 

I chose a career for myself more than 17 years ago because I had some time to myself to think it through.

I had thought that I would invariably do my master’s degree and start my academic career mainly because I did very well in a subject area and colleagues and lecturers alike were tipping me in that direction.

I was alone (away from the counsels and distractions) in a one-year national service post-graduation, and I had time – “in solitude” – to self-reflect and decide for myself. This has turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made for myself.

Personally, I have experienced the power of self-reflection in enabling personal growth. Quite a few times when I received developmental feedback from colleagues, I spent time seeking more clarity and taking time to reflect on mindsets and behaviors that make me come across as such.

For example, I used to think that I was more of a people person than task-focused but my very first major personality assessment showed otherwise. I actually took time to reflect on why and I realized most of my interactions with people (which happens a lot and I thought I was people focused) were mainly about getting things done – tasks!
